For the Kid Who Loves…

  • Food
    • Mr. Bear’s World of Food
      • Thank you, Chronicle! I laughed out loud with joy at the baguette at the end of a ribbon bookmark in this book. If you love food, you are going to adore this book and you are going to want to read it a lot with your budding foodie kids. The illustrations are so cute and I so appreciate kids getting to learn about food this way.
  • Marine Life
    • Over and Under the Waves
      • Thank you, Chronicle! If you don’t already know this series, it’s a must. Beautifully done and so informative, I think these will be read for years to come and absolutely belong in your home library.
  • The Spooky
    • Beatrice Likes the Dark
      • Thank you, Algonquin Young Readers! We ADORE this one.  Beatrice and Roo are two sisters who are opposites and this story of how they come together with its beautiful, rich illustrations and lovely storytelling is one we will be reading on repeat during spooky season.  Highly recommend adding this to your collection.
  • Cozy Island Life
    • Poppy’s House
      • By cozy island life, I mean the type of kid who is also going to delight with you over a life on Newfoundland filled with warm baked bread for breakfast, knitting, and exploring hills dotted with puffins.  I am absolutely in love with this book and think many of you will be, too.  It’s such a sweet story of a little girl visiting her grandfather and their bond and Maeve and I delighted in poring over the cozy details.
  • Trains
    • Trainbow
      • Thank you, Chronicle! This would be such a great baby gift because the book accordions out, which would make it wonderful for tummy time, plus it’s colorful and fun.
  • Dogs
    • Everywhere With You
      • Thank you, Candlewick! This is such a sweet story about a girl who befriends a lonely dog and their moving bond.  Our daughter was really touched by the story and I was blown away by the illustrations. We’re already reading this one over and over and I know it will be a staple around here.
  • Special Memories
    • Mum, Me, and the Mulberry Tree
      • Thank you, Candlewick! This one is so beautiful. A little girl and her mother head to the English countryside for their annual picking of mulberries to bake into a pie.  I so appreciate the reminder of how special traditions are, the beautiful bond between the mom and child, and the softly lit, heartwarming illustrations from one of our favorite illustrators.
  • Fantasy
    • Giant Island
      • Thank you, Flashlight Press!  Hopefully you already know and love Jane Yolen. This one does not disappoint and we so enjoyed getting carried along on this quite, evocatively imaginative journey.
  • Mindfulness
    • Alphabreaths Too: More ABCS of Mindful Breathing
      • Thank you, Sounds True! It’s amazing the fantastic resources that kids and their caretakers now have for mindfulness.  This one is so much fun with its different poses and techniques for breathing that makes it so approachable for kids.  Our daughter loves trying out the different poses and I love that’s she equipping herself with such excellent tools she can use for her whole life. Playful and empowering, this feels like one that every caregiver should give a try.
  • Moody Beach Adventures
    • Granny and Bean
      • Thank you, Candlewick! If, like me, you prefer a moody beach to a sunshine-drenched one, you will certainly delight in this read.  I was excited to see that Karen Hesse wrote this (Out of the Dust fans, anyone?) and very much enjoyed the lyricism of her writing paired with these lovely, soft illustrations.
  • Cars
    • Big Green Garage
      • Thank you, Chronicle! This board book has SUCH fun interactive elements! I haven’t seen any like these and, as someone who has zero interest in cars, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, so that’s a ringing endorsement, right? The rhyme, illustrations, and again, those interactions, make this one you and your kid are going to be happy to read again and again.
  • Imagination
    • Charlie and Mouse are Magic
      • Thank you, Chronicle! We love this duo and this latest one is a joy.  This is perfect for kids who are starting to want to dip their toes into chapter books. There is something very sweetly classic about this series, so it’s definitely one I think a lot of you caregivers are going to appreciate, and our daughter is always inspired afterwards to play something related to the stories- for this one it was making potions.
  • Books
    • Books Aren’t For Eating
      • Thank you, Candlewick! This one delighted our daughter with its silly premise of a goat owning a bookstore trying to teach another goat to love books enough to stop himself from eating them. I was absolutely sold on the goat’s oh so cozy bookstore and his pride in his ability to match the right book to the right person.  Bookish friends, pick this one up.
    • We Love Books!
      • Thank you, Chronicle! Cozy and immersive with its uniquely shaped pages, this board book is one that anyone bookish is going to delight over.
  • World Building
    • If You Were A City
      • Thank you, Chronicle! The vibrancy and playfulness of this book are so memorable. We have so much fun examining the details of the pictures and discussing the questions posed in the book. You’ll be poring over this one often.
  • Pizza
    • Made with Love!: Pizza
      • Thank you, Chronicle! Another fantastic series and please tell me you love pizza. This would be so cute as a gift paired with a play food pizza and we love reading it before we have our pizza nights.
  • Love
    • I Love You Like
      • Thank you, Chronicle! This little book is so sweet and there’s something very special about these unexpected little comparisons. Read while snuggling.
  • Baby Silliness
    •  I Am a Baby
      • Thank you, Candlewick! I can seeing grandmas in particular wanting to buy this for their families, or parents with deadpan humor who won’t flinch at the memories of sleepness nights, hah.  Our daughter declared it very silly, a high toddler compliment.
  • Reminiscing
    • Mommy’s Hometown
      • Thank you, Candlewick! This story, of a boy and his mother traveling back to where she grew up in Korea and seeing all the changes, inspired a great conversation with our daughter and is such a lovely way to think about home and family and the passage of time.
  • Snuggles
    • Little Wild Animal Hugs
      • Thank you, Chronicle! This is an adorable board book pairing up various animals to give each other hugs.
